Pigeon fanciers, Sufi mystics, Muslim healers, musicians, calligraphers, philosophers and a guild of eunuchs all provide Dalrymple with entertaining insights… It is fine, entertaining, well written stuff, thoroughly researched but with none of the stern academic tone that so many historical profiles adopt. The publisher also issued three other titles thusly, but quickly abandoned the project. The intention and publication history of this variant is disputed: it was done either as an "Armed Services Edition" or as a short-lived experiment in paperback publishing. One of reportedly 2500 copies (we have also heard the figure of just 200 copies from another source, which seems to be discredited) of the first edition sheets bound up by the publisher in wrappers duplicating the dustjacket art. What makes a book an "Antiquarian Book"?. 6/12/2023 0 Comments The memoirs of cleopatra a novelAnd the splashing…I can still hear the splashing, hear the brief, surprised cries. My mother gone, and I tumbling through the air, caught by other arms, rough ones that grip so hard around my middle that I can hardly breathe. I remember…Īnd then…the memory is torn apart, upended, overturned, as the boat must have been. I am held safely, cradled in love and watchfulness. It makes me very sleepy, and the sloshing of the water all around me makes a blanket of sound, wrapping me securely. The boat is rocking gently, and my mother is rocking me as well, so I sway to a double rhythm. And closer even than that, the lulling, drowsy smell of my mother’s skin by my nose, where she holds me against her bosom, her hand making a sunshade across my forehead to shield my eyes. I even taste the sting of the salt against my lips, where the fine, misty spray coats them. Dancing blue waters, and the sound of waves. Until then, she will continue hiding her extraordinary intelligence behind a mask of mediocrity, acting the part of an average pre-teen high on pop culture, a good but not outstanding student, an obedient if obstinate daughter. Talented and precocious, she’s come to terms with life’s seeming futility and decided to end her own on her thirteenth birthday. Paloma is a twelve-year-old who lives on the fifth floor. With biting humor, she scrutinizes the lives of the tenants-her inferiors in every way except that of material wealth. But Renée has a secret: she furtively, ferociously devours art, philosophy, music, and Japanese culture. In short, she’s everything society expects from a concierge at a bourgeois building in an upscale neighborhood. Her only genuine attachment is to her cat, Leo. In an elegant hôtel particulier in Paris, Renée, the concierge, is all but invisible-short, plump, middle-aged, with bunions on her feet and an addiction to television soaps. They are rescued and taken in by a mysterious and beautiful outsider, who lives alone in the depths of Loraheem Forest. Ollie then ends up going to school with Will, who is acting much different than the caring, sweet guy Ollie met over the summer. Ollie expected to move back to California at the end of the summer, but because his aunt Linda has cancer, his family decided to stay and support her and her family. Ollie, the book’s narrator, had a summer fling with Will in North Carolina. Billed as a queer retelling of Grease, I don’t think you really need to be a fan of the musical or movie to enjoy the book. Sophie Gonzales’s 2020 novel Only Mostly Devastated has become one of my favorite YA books that I read this summer. Gharib’s mother grew up in a wealthy Filipino family and strongly opposed moving to the United States. She also details what it was like to feel pressured to live the American Dream her parents wanted for her. In Gharib’s newest book, she discusses the struggles of balancing two vehemently opposed cultures in her Filipino and Egyptian heritage. The author talk is an opportunity for writers to come speak to the three APS high schools about their work. Gharib is an Egyptian-Filipino American and, this year, she assumed the honor of being featured in Arlington Public School’s (APS) author talk. On December 1, 2021, our school welcomed Malaka Gharib, journalist at NPR and author of I Was Their American Dream, a graphic memoir detailing her acclamation to numerous cultures.
